Soft and Stiff a Hanging Tassel, for Art Criticism & Other Short Stories, Edited by Helen Reed, 2019
Soft and Stiff a Hanging Tassel is a short story of an erotic encounter with the sculptures of Jade Yumang by a fictional gender queer art critic named Æ.
Originally produced and distributed by artist Helen Reed as a series of fanfiction zines, Art Criticism & Other Short Stories collects together fifteen of the very best of these texts — from deliriously concocted alternate realities and erotic fantasies, to cutting appraisals of gender and power. Featuring writing by a diverse lineup of artists, writers, curators and critics working in and alongside contemporary art , this anthology of oddball writing shows us just how critical and gushing true fandom can be, proving once and for all that these qualities are not mutually exclusive. - Blank Cheque Press
With contributions by Rose Bouthillier, Amber Dawn, Jen Delos Reyes, Amy Fung, Anna Gray & Ryan Wilson Paulsen, Onya Hogan-Finlay, Ariana Jacob, Sam Korman, Vanessa Kwan, Hazel Meyer, Dan Nelson, Darren O'Donnell, Carmen Papalia, Helen Reed, and Maya Suess. Printed and bound by Blank Cheque Press in Vancouver.
In an earlier zine manifestation of Art Criticism & Other Short Stories, Maya Suess published a short story titled Through the Window Miss Chief Rides, which describes a lesbian settler of early Canada experiencing and exotifying Kent Monkman's charater Miss Chief Eagle Testicle.
Writing Through Desire a review of Art Criticism and Other Short Stories in Canadian Art, written by Daniella Sanader, with an extensive discussion of Soft and Stiff.
